Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are an arts integrated K-8 public school in an urban center. We are 90% free or reduced lunch. The population is 99% latino and African American. Our lights on after school program gives 2nd through 8th graders a variety of opportunities for enrichment and increased self-esteem. We plan to bring in guitarists from the community to teach and demonstrate their different styles as well as give the children basic guitar lessons. At the end of the semester the children will perform for their families and teachers. All of the classes are taught by teachers at the school. I teach first grade and play my guitar in class at least once a week. The children are always begging for classes, so this is a way for me to give them a few skills supplementary to our music program during the school day.

The grant we received this year was even smaller than last year and specified "no instruments." The children and parents in this community do not have expensive items like guitars at their disposal. But the interest is immense. What I hear from them is,"Can you teach me to play the guitar?"

I need 10 student guitars, or as close to that as possible. The guitar is a great social instrument. You can accompany yourself, empowering performance, while facing your audience. Many of our children don't speak English very well. Music is a great equalizer. The children can express themselves in a human, universal language. Many of our students are frustrated, angry,or hopeless. The guitar is fun, easy and rewarding and pacifies the beast at the door.

Your help may save the life of a depressed teen, or may be the beginning of a brilliant career. Your gift might keep a child in school because he has something to look forward to. Your gift will keep 10 children away from the gangs in the neighborhood while they are safe in the building after school. Someday, because of your gift, the whole world could hear the next Romero.
