My Students

Do you remember the magical experience of the first film you ever saw as a child? Now imagine the excitement and pride that our students feel as they create films and make movie magic all of their own! Each day at our school, amazing students from all walks of life are presented with the unique opportunity to learn the craft of film and media production, embracing the language and power of the moving image.

Although our students learn the technical skills needed to creatively tell stories through film and video, they lack access to many of the fundamental tools of the industry.

I teach an incredibly gifted group of students, and it is my goal as their Film instructor to help provide them the filmmaking equipment and resources they need to be successful.

Our school lies in the heart of the hostess city, beautiful Savannah, GA. Every year our Film Studies program gives voice to over 200 film production students, many whom aspire to have careers in the booming Georgia film & television industry!

My Project

Cinematography involves everything from the photographic composition of a film’s scene down to the science and technology of cameras, lenses and creative lighting design. As media creators, our students understand the importance of effective cinematography. Filmmaking is a labor of love and our students strive each day towards a mastery of light and lens to become more amazing storytellers!

So that our students can better learn the visual art and technology of motion picture photography, it is important they are able to participate in instructor-led filmmaking workshops and camera and lighting equipment demonstrations.

Currently, our classroom offers no such option and no way for students to collectively “see” what the lens is “seeing” while they learn about fundamental filmmaking principles. Simply put, it is impossible for large groups of 20 or more students to huddle around a tiny 3” LCD camera display and expect to see what the lens of the camera sees. That’s just too tiny!

In the classroom, students need to a way to properly monitor filmmaking techniques in real time as they learn the art and technology of motion picture photography. The use of a 65” monitor display for in-depth instructional workshops would help me teach my students the professional industry techniques we use to make the ”look” of our films more polished and technically advanced. Your contribution helps support this film education in our classroom, and ultimately our community as we prepare students to become the future generation of media makers!
