My Students

Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as attention-deficit, dyslexia, social-emotional, and autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with socioeconomic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.

Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!

Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!

My Project

I am a Diverse Learner Teacher and Social-Emotional Leaning Change Agent at my school. In this role, I work with students with special needs as well as work alongside my colleagues educating students in grades 3-5 about becoming socially competent. During the school day, I also support students in 6-8th grades through a school-based mentoring program that focuses on the esteem and emotional intelligence of teen girls.

Topics discussed are confidence, identify, friendships, healthy relationships, cyberbullying and perspectives of females in the media.

Our teens have discussed struggles with images & peer conflict and resolution based upon what is presented through reality television and the propaganda of social media in which teen girls compare their lives.

As a part of the program, teens will be introduced to women in the media and how females are positively portrayed when the power is placed in their hands - the camera. The goal is build the communication skills of students through "talk" and through creating their own videos. Teen students will not only build social competence through telling storytelling, they will gain hands-on experience with pre-production, production and post-production of movie making. The goal is for teen female students to use this platform to help other teens as they navigate through adolescence in the academic setting.

The Canon Video Creator Kit will allow for hands-on experience with camera operation. The Tascam 4-Channel Portable Recorder educates about quality sound production. The Neewer 2 Pieces Bi-color Video Light Kit creates adequate video lighting. The Neewer Film Movie Kit is for video stabilization. The Dear Teen Self: Tips to help a teenage girl navigate through adolescence and a A Girl's World are Social Emotional Workbooks for Teen Girls. Making YouTube Videos and How are Movies are Made teaches the 3 phases of filmmaking!
