My Students

Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as attention-deficit, dyslexia, social-emotional, and autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with socioeconomic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.

Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!

Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!

My Project

I am a Diverse Learner Teacher and Social-Emotional Leaning Change Agent at my school. In this role, I work with students with special needs as well as work alongside my colleagues educating students in becoming socially competent. During the school day, I also support students through an SEL partnerships and school-based mentoring program that focuses on the esteem and emotional intelligence of pre-teen/teen girls.

Topics discussed are confidence, identify, friendships, healthy relationships, cyberbullying and perspectives of females in the media.

The goal is to help students to redefine their narratives and retell their stories of strength, courage and resilience. Teens have discussed struggles with self-image & peer conflict-resolution based upon what is presented through reality television and the definition of beauty based on social media in which teen girls compare their lives.

As a part of the program, teens are introduced to women in the media and how females are positively portrayed when the power is placed in their hands - the camera. Teen girls will not only build social competence through storytelling, they will gain hands-on experience with pre-production, production and post-production of filmmaking. The goal is for students to use this platform to help also help their teen girl peers as they navigate through adolescence.

The 3 Pack VILTROX Bi-Color Dimmable Studio Video Light kit and the CRAPHY Photography Studio Soft Box Lighting Kit will create quality lighting for students' videos. The GVM Motorized Camera Slider will stabilize the camera footage. The portable speaker will provide volume-elevated directions. The Teen Girl's Survival Guide: Ten Tips for Making Friends, Avoiding Drama, and Coping with Social Stress,The Girl's Guide to Loving Yourself and Letz Talk Conversation Starter and Question Cards - Builds Self-Esteem and Confidence in Teens are resources to provide conversations and activities to enhance esteem/social competence!
