Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever wanted to travel to the Grand Canyon on a moment's notice? This could happen, with just one wish!

My students are witty, inquisitive, eager to learn, and respectful.

Our classroom is made up of majority of Hispanic students who are mostly first generation Americans. Often, they go home and teach their parents what they have learned. In many cases, they are also teaching their parents English, as the students themselves are English Language Learners. They LOVE to learn. They are eager to learn about the world around them. Unfortunately, financial restraints prohibit them from exploring even the city they live in. The classroom is often the only chance for the use of technology when only a handful of students have Internet access at home. Our school is a public school with approximately 900 students enrolled. 99% of the students are Free/Reduced lunch. You will never meet a more wonderful group of students. They are willing to do whatever it takes to become responsible members of their community, overcoming whatever obstacle is placed in front of them.

My Project

Living in Arizona, we are fortunate to have so many places of interest within driving distance. However, we all know that the budget does not always give us the chance to visit them! Put a Flip cam in the hands of my students, and they will take you there in the blink of an eye! Students will be putting their research skills to the test to find out whatever they can about places like The Grand Canyon, Montezuma's Castle, Jerome, Tombstone, Kartchner Caverns, to list a few! They will then put their pens to the paper and write scripts that include those "need to know" facts and fun bits of information regarding their chosen locale. The end product will be a fun STUDENT CREATED movie showcasing their Reading, Research, Writing, and Acting skills. So Lights! Camera! Learning!!!

The benefits of this project and the availability of the Flip cam are endless.

These students will have a voice and an opportunity to let that voice be heard! These cameras will be used for many other projects as well!
