Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class is located in North East Los Angeles on a regular education campus that houses two additional Magnets schools. Our school has housed the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program for over 20 years. We have three classrooms dedicated to our students from Preschoolers, age 3, to Fifth graders.
My students are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, mostly Latino, and mostly of low socioeconomic status.
They all communicate through American Sign Language (ASL). They are in grades: Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten but I work closely with First and Second grade as well. All of them are behind in reading and writing, yet they are excited to come to school, to learn, and experience life. They are visual learners especially when it comes to communicating.
My Project
My Deaf students communicate through basic ASL. Many of my students come to school at age three with minimal receptive and expressive ASL skills for a variety of reasons. Through your donations we will purchase Galaxy A Tablets, a backdrop stand, a tripod adapter, a blue/green collapsible backdrop, a CD/DVD/RW ROM player/writer/burner, and use them to make videos of their storytelling capabilities all the while increasing their vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics of ASL.
Imagine...the tablet recording, tiny fingers moving fervently through the air setting the scene, children's faces filled with vivid expressions, role shift movements to differentiate characters in the story, the story plot thickens with conflict, climax, and the resolution...children bow with pride in their faces and body language.
They will be exposed to ASL story telling skills through Teacher modeling and learn the 4 Cs of the 21st Century skills: collaboration, communication, critical thinking skills, and creativity through their own story telling in front of their peers. They will view their videos and their peers will provide constructive feedback through the use of learned sentence frames in various areas. Students will work together to improve their story telling expression. Parents will view their child's story telling skills through a website created by the Teacher. The Teacher's uploaded ASL stories will be watched by students at home with their Parents requiring them to learn, practice, and memorize the story at home to perform at school.
All these skills will assist in their overall language development allowing them to communicate not only their basic needs and wants but express their innermost thoughts and imagination leading to future artists, scientists, engineers, craftsmen using all the skills they acquired at a young age.
