Lights, Camera, Action! Setting Ourselves Apart With Our School News

My Students

My students are creative, fun, and full of innovative ideas! They love creating concepts and working together to make them come to fruition. My students come from a low-income, high poverty, small town, rural community. My students love learning, and many of them often have few opportunities to grow and learn unless they are at school. As their media specialist, I work to create opportunities that challenge them and set high expectations so they can discover their greatest potential.

Many of my students have experienced more difficulties in their short lives than many adults.

School is often their only constant in life, providing for many of them a warm place to be and two meals a day. Some are taking care of younger siblings at home while their parents work, and some are unsure of where they will be sleeping at night. I have to be more than their teacher; I am their parent, their mentor, their coach, and their disciplinarian. While they are at school, I'd like for them to have chances to experience learning in a whole different way while also learning life-long skills of communication and collaboration. I cannot let them down.

My Project

My initial goal for these materials is to allow my news crew students to be able to produce our weekly news show with better quality. Using the updated video camera they will be able to produce a high-quality video with clearer audio, and with the use of the green screen/lighting combo, we will be able to be more creative with our backgrounds. Our weekly news shows get shared through our school's social media pages, and our students are very proud of the work they do already. Having these materials will just make it that much better!

However, my news crew will not be the only students to use this equipment!

I have big plans for it to be made available to the other students in the school as well. Once the equipment is set up and housed in a common room in our learning commons, teachers and students will be able to use the video recording equipment for their own creative projects. This will give all of our students in my school the ability to create and be innovative in their own right.
