This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am so grateful to teach at my school. Most of my students are emergent bilinguals and are in the process of learning and mastering English. They are hard workers and truly want to be the best they can be.

I have found that teaching science combined with hands-on experiments makes all the difference, especially when teaching students learning a second language.

The experiments support my students in learning the vocabulary needed to describe what they are observing and make sense of the concepts learned. In one of our experiments, we will use lenses to study how the pupil and brain work together to project images. In another, we will create an electric circuit by using batteries and LED lights.

Students will need to take the nationwide science test for 5th grade at the end of the year. This project will not only prepare them well, but it will also engage them and make them excited about science.
