Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These 11th graders are amazing! They all attend a Title 1 school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. The students from this school do not attend many field trips other than college visits. These students are made up of struggling readers, scholars, artists, athletes, loners, social butterflies, and etc. Even though a large percentage of them struggle with class attendance and myriad trauma outside of school, they show up most days and participate in the engaging lessons that I take much time and care in planning.

These students are lucky enough to be part of a program called InterAct, which allows them to have a unique experience that most students do not get to participate in.

As part of the program, these students get to attend three plays throughout the year free of charge. These plays have been worked into our curriculum and have a meaningful community-based significance to the expectations in the classroom.

These students are genuinely excited about this opportunity. We had a teaching artist come into work with our learners, and 100% of the learners were engaged. Engagement = rich learning experience.

My Project

Students will learn, laugh, cry, and share the human experience in a way that they are presently unfamiliar with. They will see that learning does not have to happen within four walls and that art reveals all the beauty and tragedy that makes us human.

This project allows the students to explore theater in a multidimensional way: students will use their hands-on experiences with the teaching artist, their viewing, and "talk back" sessions with the actors to deepen their learning.

Without this type of real-world involvement in the arts, most of these learners would not experience or have the chance to develop a love for theater. In addition, the experiences open the students' eyes to many possible occupations that they were not aware existed, such as teaching artists, stage crews, sound and light technicians, and etc.
