This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher at a Title I school. I teach musical theater in East Los Angeles to students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in an after-school program. The students are growing up in an economically depressed area, with gang activity present in the community.
Despite the situations in which they live, these students are enthusiastic, and creative learners who are eager for new experiences.
Participating in Musical Theater has opened up new opportunities for them. They love acting, dancing, and singing, and are looking forward to this year’s production.
My Project
Musical theater has a strong impact on our elementary students who have little exposure to the world of musicals, and theater production outside of school. This past year they have learned to develop communication skills, and to work in teams toward a common goal. Their language skills, self esteem, and self confidence grew noticeably. We found that our students who had participated in our theater program experienced improved reading comprehension, and were more engaged in their learning. These students gained confidence in expressing themselves effectively, while improving their English language skills. Students who participated in the musical discovered their hidden talents as they became more involved. The equipment we are requesting, portable stage lights, will greatly improve the lighting for our dark stage. Proper stage lighting is important for creating a mood and cohesiveness for the setting and scenery. It would greatly improve the visibility of the students, and enhance the stage environment. The students are eager for the our next production, The Lion King Kids.
