This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At the moment, we are doing remote learning from our homes. Many of our parents are still working, so students are home with older siblings, grandparents or sitters.
Our community of East Elmhurst, Queens NY was hit hard and is suffering a great deal.
We have children who have lost loved ones, children who have been uprooted from their homes to other locations because of sick parents who cannot take care of them.
Since Pre-K involves hands on learning, they are lacking the resources necessary to successfully use their creativity and imagination. With this sudden remote learning shift, families were not able to get the appropriate materials to effectively allow these children to have the best possible education they deserve.
My Project
These young Pre-K children deserve hands on manipulatives and materials to help them learn and explore. They need to develop fine motor skills, as well as academic areas such as math and literacy. Many of the households do not have the proper materials to facilitate their ability to be creative. It's difficult enough that they do not completely comprehend what is happening and why they are not with their teacher's and friends. There is no need to have them struggle any more than they have to! Having these materials will give them the opportunity to physically and academically flourish!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
