Light-Up Robots: Where Art Meets Electricity

Help me give my students LEDs, adhesive copper tape, lithium 3V batteries, and foam board to create exciting, interactive light-up robots from circuits they will build in our elementary art room.

My Project

My fifth grade students come from a wide range of backgrounds and learning levels, but they all share one thing in common: a love for creating in the art room. They thrive when given hands-on opportunities to explore, imagine, and build. By incorporating STEAM—adding Art to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—we hope to deepen their engagement and broaden their creative and academic horizons.

This project will introduce students to basic electrical circuitry through the lens of artistic expression.

Each student will design and color a robot on foam board, then flip it over to build a working paper circuit that lights up an LED using a battery and copper tape.

This interactive experience will allow students to:

Apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Learn the fundamentals of how electricity works

Express their creativity through both visual art and hands-on engineering

By merging science and art, this project will spark curiosity and innovation in our students. It will also help them see how creative thinking plays an essential role in today’s high-tech world. With your support, we can inspire a new generation of artists, inventors, and thinkers.
