This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Where are the actors? Help us properly light our actors with a 24 channel light board and dimmers.
We are a middle school drama / speech department serving grades 6 - 8.
Our Title I school district is in a high-risk community where most students are minority and low-income. Though our students struggle at times to succeed, they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment.
We have an after school drama club program where students can participate in 2 full length plays, improv team, speech team and Thespian society for free (no activity fees). This program allows students of all ability levels and learning types to play a role in the creative process.
We try to find a place for any child interested in the performing arts. Not only do we put students on stage, but backstage as well. Students are responsible for just about every aspect of the creative process: sound, set, props, costumes, makeup, and lights are all made /executed by the theater students.
My Project
I would like to teach my students to create mood and express a theme for our plays using light. The more control they have of individual lights, the better. Right now we have a 4 channel light board. We can change the color of the whole stage, but do not have enough control to light one part in blue and another in red for example. We also have only 1 dimmer. This means that we can only use about 16 lights to light up our stage. The result is about half as bright as it should be.
If we had a 24 channel board and more dimmers we could create bright, colorful lighting designs.
Not only could we make it easier for the audience to see the action on stage, we could help our viewers understand the mood and theme of the play through lighting.
