My Students

My students are 3, 4 and 5 years old in a Montessori classroom within an inner city public school. Our school is considered a school of poverty with 98% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. However, we are rich in love and respect! In my class, I have 6 three year olds, 8 four year olds, and 7 five year olds. These children spend 3 years with me. The children in my class are curious and full of life. They learn best when moving around! The Montessori learning style gives them freedom of choice and movement. As they work, the students become more focused and practice the necessary skills each day that will enable them to become lifelong learners.

My Project

Sensory play is important in the development and learning of young children. If children use multiple senses to learn a new concept, they are more likely to retain new information. A light table is a perfect way to enhance their abilities to concentrate for longer periods of time while exploring literacy, science and math. By using a light table the students will have hands on experiences with letters, shapes, numbers and even X-rays that will allow them to manipulate and study new concepts in a different way. The lights on the table will motivate and engage them in their learning.
