Our school has a population of students that do not have an abundance of opportunity. Many of them are exposed to a variety of life experiences through the school alone. One thing we struggle to do is help them to find a love of reading. Our goal is to help foster their love of reading, by implementing 'Fun Fridays' focused around literature. One way to achieve this goal is to have "Flashlight Fridays" once a month. We will provide a designated amount of time for them to read their books with a flashlight.
Through the use of a tool like a flashlight, students can be excited about literature and reading.
Many of our students have described Flashlight Friday as a time where it feels like they are having a slumber party, reading when they are supposed to be sleeping, or camping outdoors. We hope that by being able to provide students with this experience, we will foster their joy to read books and remind them that reading gives you somewhere to go when you have to stay where you are.
A challenge third graders face, is reading grade level text accurately while being timed. A focus of our grade is to expose them to timed reads on a regular basis in order to lessen anxiety for reading aloud while being timed. The timers will allow them to monitor themselves while practicing timed reads.
Having flashlights and timers will support our third grade team to intrinsically motivate our students to have a love of literature and grow in reading.
