My Students
The students of Collaboration Cabin are a diverse group of 5th graders with varied abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds. They are bright and energetic with a passion for working together and growing as learners.
I have never taught a group of students who loved to read as much as these do!
They beg for silent reading time and look for opportunities to discuss what they are reading with others. This group also loves to discuss their ideas in science and social studies. Many students in this group enjoy writing and learning new concepts in math as well. They are a well rounded group of young people. I'm excited to watch them grow this year!
My Project
As in most 5th grade classrooms, my students have a lot of energy and struggle to focus. The fluorescent lighting does not help them to calm their minds and bodies and in some cases actually causes an increase in these behaviors. Since we only have two small windows at the back corner of the room, turning off the lights and using natural lightning is not really an option.
Recently I bought two salt lamps, like the ones in this project, and placed them in my classroom; instantly students were better able to calm themselves.
I've started turning them on during independent work time which has helped tremendously; however, it is not enough light for the whole room and does not help with areas like the classroom library or the ELA teaching area on the other end of the room.
With these items we would be able to provide a comfortably soothing environment to promote student learning and retention.
