Light Up Cards

My students need the 3V lithium batteries and the LED lights to create their own current using the copper tape.

My Students

My students are so full of life and love of learning. The population, of our little Title I school in Brooklyn, NY is made up of many different cultures, from all over the world, who work together to help build peace at home, at school and in our community.

They are the peace builders for the future.

They are learning to communicate and collaborate to solve problems and learn. They are learning to have a growth mindset and know that mistake only opens another door towards the solution. They will practice these skills and more as we explore through STEAM activities.

My Project

In science the students learn about electric currents and circuits. They usually use a D cell battery and paper clip to light up a light bulb. It usually ends there.

How exciting would it be for the students to then create their own light up pop-up cards!

Using the materials such as copper tape, LED lights and coin cell batteries the students will explore how to make a simple circuit that lights up an LED on a piece of paper. We will be making pop-up cards to display their circuit. The cards will then be delivered to the local nursing home and VA hospital to brighten someones day.

This simple project can lead to the students to explore more ideas, materials, and projects. They can experiment with more advanced techniques, such as creating a DYI switch or making a parallel circuit with multiple lights. This is just a starting point in exposing students to circuitry in a fun and creative way.
