This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school greenhouse is full of growing potential and learning opportunities for the student population, especially the science classes and horticulture club. Unfortunately, the low light conditions of winter, coupled with uneven sunlight, have resulted in inconsistent growth and problematic growing scenarios. Research and discussions with greenhouse specialists yielded a direct solution: supplemental greenhouse lighting. Monios-L 4FT 60W LED Grow Lights would allow us to commit to our growing projects with increased consistency, regardless of cloudy days, weak winter sun, or greenhouse shade spots from surrounding trees. Consistent, full-spectrum lighting will allow for around-the-clock vigorous germination, vegetation and flowering of our vegetables and ornamental flowers.

Our main goal for this project is to furnish the greenhouse with lighting to ensure that plant life can thrive consistently.

We have witnessed germination efforts fail as a result of a few cloudy days. Young seedlings grew thin, leggy and tipped over when not supplied with steady light. The bright, showy colors of our tropical plants faded away before the leaves dropped. Other projects, such as our DIY hydro cloner, worked but would have likely been met with much more success with adequate lighting for the young clones. The addition of LED lighting would not only curtail these issues but would allow the greenhouse to be utilized to its fullest potential, both in terms of time used and efficiency.

Many of our high school students have been dedicated to the pursuit of refurbishing the high school greenhouse. Members of the Horticulture Club, along with an array of other students, dedicated hours after school as well as on Saturdays to the greenhouse, disposing of old materials, cleaning, nurturing donated plants, and beautifying the courtyards. This addition would behoove the horticulture club, science students, and science teachers at our high school.
