My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
This year marks our schools first musical performances! Our students are so excited to be part of our school's first cabaret, and are looking forward to this springs full musical production! We are still a growing school and do not have a theater or black box to perform in.
There is no greater feeling than being on stage with the spotlight on you as you sing your song.
Asking students to perform in front of their families, teachers, and peers can be intimidating, especially the first time. These spotlights will not only create a professional atmosphere, but help give students confidence. (If you've ever been on stage, you know that once the spot light it on, you can't see the audience anymore). Your donation will create opportunities for stagehands to work the lights, and help us convert a classroom into a worthy performance space!
