Children are the light of our future! I teach music to K-5 students in Nevada. This is my third year with these kids and they are just wonderful! But we're always looking for new, creative and fun ways to learn in my classroom!
I've been searching for a way to get my younger students more actively involved in listening and analyzing music. We tried journaling last year but it took too long and they don't have a big enough vocabulary just yet. In addition, our school theme this year is about growing and they could use some new songs to help them remember things about school as they grow.
I've finally found a great way! It uses flashlights which will also give the students something to do besides just listen! Using flashlights and some fun, engaging music, we will turn down the lights and SHOW what the music is doing by shining and dancing our flashlights on the ceiling as a mimic of what we hear! As stated earlier, our school theme this year is about growing and my students could use some new songs to help them remember things about school as they grow. Things like parts of plants, weather, bugs and I've found just the right set of books and CDs to get the ball rolling on this. It's so exciting!
We could really use your help teaching these students how to FOCUS on the details of life so they can BE the light of the future. Music empowers children... and adults. Engaging students in music and teaching them how to listen and analyze music is a great tool! It will help make them more well rounded. We use music on a daily basis so I know how important it is to lay down a good foundation. Think about it... when you go to the gym, you take an ipod or Mp3 player and when you're driving in the car or riding a bike, the radio is playing. Every TV show has a theme song and additionally each scene has music but it blends in so well that often we don't notice it. I can help students focus on those little things and while they seem little and insignificant, I feel that if they can notice the smallest detail in music in everyday life, they may also notice the smallest details ABOUT life.
