Light 'Em Up! Creativity and Coding

My students need Let's Start Coding Kits to ignite an interest in coding by seeing their coding projects come alive.

My Students

Our student body is very diverse in regard to ethnic backgrounds, culture, socioeconomic status, intelligence levels, and learning styles. Various minority/ethnic groups compose 70% of our student body.

Our diversity makes us special, and our students embrace it!

They enjoy learning about each other's cultural traditions through school and community multicultural events. Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 23% participate in special education programs, and 40% in language acquisition programs.

Statistics show that students from poor communities are at a higher risk of dropping out of school, and not pursuing college or technical programs leading to STEM related careers. I will do everything possible to give our students the best learning opportunities available, and empower them to succeed in life after high school. Putting the latest technology in our students' hands will provide learning experiences they would not have otherwise enjoyed, and stimulate interest in a high-skill career.

My Project

Currently, our school only offers coding as an Advanced Placement course. Advanced Placement classes are intimidating for many of our students; therefore, we plan to implement an introductory coding class in the Fall of 2018, and hope to begin by using these coding kits.

I want to "Light 'Em Up" and ignite a passion for computer science at our school; I want to provide coding opportunities for all students, at all learning levels; not just advanced placement students.

Block coding is great for learning the basic concepts, but high school students need to learn to use language skills for coding in order to really get a feel for what a coding career may be like.

I am requesting Let's Start Coding Kits to ignite an interest in coding by seeing their coding projects come alive.I chose the Let's Start Coding Kits for my coding classes because once students learn some basic coding concepts, they will be able to use these kits to create their own coding projects. Students can get creative with imaginative projects that utilize lights, sounds and sensors.

Students will begin by completing the step-by-step projects that come with the kits. After learning some basic skills, they will begin to apply those skills to their own authentic projects.
