My Students
Teaching Art in an intermediate school my students number over 300 per year. I try and promote creativity in each of them. my school population consists of student with varying levels of ability that come from many different cultural back grounds.
Funds for the arts are limited in my district I have had to work with a budget of less than two dollars a student for an entire year since I started teaching over 30 years ago.
I see these students on average of two times a week and have learned to make due with little materials. Because of the limit in funds some tools have had to be improvised or done with out. Each of these students have the potential to shine if given the proper resources.
My Project
Many of my students need support to be successful. Light boxes can help those students with manual dexterity issues and other impairments impeding their success. Tracing art subjects helps children recognize details, such as whether the subject is straight or curved, smooth or rough. This familiarity can help build a child's confidence as an artist.
Tracing can help children develop fine motor skills, which can aid them with other tasks, such as learning to write.
It also helps students with developmental disabilities to develop math and language skills. Other benefits of tracing include improvement in hand/eye coordination, dexterity and spatial awareness.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
