This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day I teach physical education to my transitional kindergarten students. I would love to provide them with a physical education program that is developmentally appropriate, improves fitness and overall health, and encourages collaboration and cooperation.

I have been teaching for more than 25 years.

Most of this time I have spent with the younger grades, including first grade, kindergarten, and now our state's newest grade level, transitional kindergarten. I find working with young children very rewarding. Although I have been teaching for some time, I strongly believe that a good teacher constantly works on improving the skills needed to best serve her students. Each year I try to take some sort of professional development course, to learn the newest techniques and research on what makes for a successful learning environment for my students.There are many professional courses available; however, most courses are too costly for me to afford on my own, and the school budget can't cover the costs either.

My Project

Recently, my school district began an initiative to promote physical education at the elementary school level. I found out about the SPARK physical fitness program a few years ago when I was provided with a SPARK materials kit. However, at the time, my school did not have any funding for training. I would like to attend the SPARK PE Institute to learn how to fully implement this program in my classroom. This is a 2 day, interactive workshop presented by experts with the program. My goal is to come away from the Institute inspired and motivated to finally begin the program with my students. The SPARK program has been honored as an Exemplary Program of the U.S. Department of Education. It promotes fitness, helps to prevent obesity, and utilizes cooperative, developmentally appropriate activities. With the focus on academics, students spend many hours seated at their desks. Daily physical fitness activities are more important than ever!
