Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help us learn an important life skill that will put us closer to being independent.
I teach students who have special needs from ages 5-10, in a public school, in a poverty stricken area, with some speaking little to no English.
I work closely with the other special education teacher on my campus who has children ages 10-13 and we combine classes for these special activities and together have 20 students to guide in these great lessons.
My Project
I believe that not only academics are important for my students. I believe they need to know important life-skills in order to one day be independent on skill being cooking. I like to do a once a week cooking lesson, of course there is more to it than just the cooking. There are lessons in preparation from hand washing, cleaning the area and so forth. They also learn the importance of following the recipe (directions). They enjoy doing these lessons and I would like to continue to do them. What we cook each week ties in to what we have learned that week. For many of the students this is the only time they really get to do anything like this because they don't get the opportunity at home for various reasons. Some of the items I am requesting for my students are nonperishable food items such as: flour, baking powder, sugar, cookie cutters, measuring spoons, muffin pans, wax paper, cookie, frosting, chocolate chips, aluminum foil, parchment paper, and pizza dough mix. We usually do a dessert but other times other food like pizza. These items are ideal to carry out my lessons.
Your donation will ensure that I am able to continue these great life skill lessons with my students see them light up when I do these activities because they enjoy them and are learning.
They take pride in what they have prepared on their own and it shows on their faces. With your support I can continue to teach these students a very important life skill and help them towards more independence.
