This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Using a dictionary seems to be a dying art; however, research has shown that students who routinely use a dictionary increase their reading comprehension. Because my students do not have access to physical dictionaries, they are left with accessing online dictionary resources that are routinely loaded with inappropriate advertising for a 4th grader. Moreover, online dictionaries are a convenience and are not always available (Internet outages, etc.). Consequently, accessing online dictionary content is often discouraged or used with limited use. Having a set of 14 Merriam Webster Elementary Dictionaries would serve my students in several ways. First, it would allow me to provide direct instruction on how to effectively use a dictionary - a potential life skill. Second, students would have access to a dictionary without relying on disruptive web browsers or the Internet. Third, students would be able to have a dictionary at their workstation, thus making a dictionary a common part of the learning day. Fourth, through the routine use of a dictionary, students gain confidence in their overall vocabulary skills and reading comprehension.
