My Students

I teach in a K-8 school on the east side of Detroit. Many of our students come from low income families, many of whom don't have access to proper reading materials at home.

“Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1,8 million words per year and will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers" (WCPO).

My Project

On average, students from lower-income homes have limited access to quality, appropriate reading materials at home. The Literacy Project states that 61% of low-income families in the US have no books at all in their home for children to read.

The goal of this project is to get high-quality books into the hands of students and parents so they can spend more time reading at home and learning to love reading!

My hope is that providing engaging books for my students will encourage them to read at home and become life long lovers of books!
