Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to read, and to read well, is daunting for most, but overwhelming and seemingly impossible for those who struggle. Students need to be able to see their progress so that they are empowered to push forward.
I teach a third grade literacy class, where all of my students are identified as below-grade level, struggling readers.
My students live in a high-poverty area and thus come from disadvantaged homes. It is not rare to have students who are homeless and I currently have two students who unfortunately, find themselves in this situation. Despite their circumstances, all of my students are very resilient and have a thirst to learn and with the right resources, they will quench their thirst.
My Project
Since my third grade students' reading levels are that of Kinder and first grade, my biggest challenge is finding the resources at their level, to help them achieve their reading goals. I have sought out the assistance of both the Kinder and first grade teachers at my school, for resources and books at these levels. However, what I borrow, I eventually need to return. My students need books that are readily available in the classroom so that they can find titles that are of interest to them and at their reading level. The focus on reading for enjoyment and allowing free choice in reading, is to foster a love for reading, while improving their reading skills. My students need a multitude of books to choose from, in both fiction and informational text, for their independent reading.
My students need books that they can read at their level, so that they may try out strategies, feel successful, develop of love of reading, and then be able to move on to the next level.
When they experience difficulty reading, it hinders their ability to pass any test, especially standardized tests which they will have to take this year. My students face so many obstacles, personally and academically, so having access to these resources, would be one less obstacle that they have to face.
