Life Through A Lens

My students need 5 digital cameras to explore and share their neighborhoods, families and communities.

My Students

As students grow and learn about the world around them, they begin to explore their world and their community as it forms and shapes them. I would like to help my students explore and share their community through the powerful medium of photography.

My students attend a public school in a high poverty area and our truly diverse student body is comprised of students from all over the world.

Over 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. As the Technology teacher, I am always striving to introduce my students to new and interesting technology that can help them understand and define their world. Photography is a a skill that can be used to teach many different lessons. Lessons on bias, presentation, persuasion, and pride. It gives the student a lens to filter their world through, to show what they are proud of, and to crop out what they choose.

My Project

I am asking for digital cameras that also have the ability record video. This will give my students the option to explore their worlds through multiple mediums, as well as giving more options for assignments. My intermediate students will use the cameras to explore their families, communities and surrounding neighborhoods. Through video, I will introduce them to the power of video and bias. Primary students will capture their Reader's Theater on video to show to other classes, thereby inspiring them to connect more with the literature and their fluency. My classes for students with Autism will also benefit from these cameras. The students have, in the past, shown great interest in looking at the world through an iPhone screen. I feel that, if given a camera, we can help the student see their world in a different, more focused way that blocks out much of the sensory details that many find overwhelming

Students of all ages need to be given different tools to show their understanding and learning.

The medium of photography will help older students who do not express their thoughts in writing to show what they understand, and allow younger students to explore and deepen their understanding of fluency as they watch their performances on video.
