My Students
Students today are so used to learning so much via technology. This is true for students with disabilities as well. We have created a Life Skills curriculum that is integrated with technology. I want our students to have all of the resources they need to maximize their potential and independence.
My students are ages 18-21 and have mild to moderate cognitive impairment.
Our program serves students from six local school districts and from a range of socio economic backgrounds.
Simply stated, these are the best students in the world. They come each day with a desire to learn and give their best effort. Our program has developed a curriculum that is focused on developing functional life skills. The topics within the curriculum are presented via class discussion, community based instruction, and technology. The topics focus on real life domains that our students will need to maximize their independence.
Our goal is to provide as many different experiences that will develop independence and confidence for our students as they move forward. Continuing to seek as many possible resources for them to attain this goal is always a primary goal of myself and our staff.
My Project
We are requesting headphones that the students may use at the computer while studying their individual life skills reading/vocabulary words. Each week we add words from our unit to build a comprehensive word bank of functional life skills words. The program that we use has an audio component that allows the students to hear the word being read to them. This is a tremendous help for students like ours who many times have difficulty reading. Having individual headphones would enable the students to work individually at their own pace without interfering with the student next to them.
The functional life skills focus of the curriculum and integrating technology has been a great source of increasing our students' confidence as well as skill level. Providing opportunities for them to increase their reading skill of functional life words is a primary goal of the program.
Reading skills are critical for any student to succeed in the world.
Our students face greater challenges than most. Providing them the resources to develop these skills is something that I feel passionately about. Our job is to do the very best we can to present the skill development tools for our students to reach their full potential so they can maximize their independence. Helping them build their confidence, helps to change their lives is such a powerful way.
