My Students

I am fortunate enough to teach life skills, social emotional skills, and wellness to a wonderful group of middle school students. My students learn valuable life skills, such as cooking, sewing, gardening, and how to be and stay well throughout life. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, such as social, financial, cultural and academic. They are all eager to learn and be productive members of society.

My Project

I am requesting sewing and cooking supplies which will benefit my classroom and students in numerous ways, which include cooking and sewing are a fun way to relieve stress, while boosting self-esteem.

Cooking helps students learn proper planning and preparation skills to see a task through from start to finish while contributing in a positive way to the health of their family and friends.

Cooking boost health and wellness. When students learn to prepare fresh foods, they will put much-needed nutrition into their diet and increase their energy and quality of health in the short and long term. Cooking also helps students learn life skills like eating healthy, budgeting money, and cleaning. Learning to cook also helps students save money. Cooking is less expensive than eating at restaurants, fast food joints and school cafeterias. Spending money on pre-packaged meals gets too expensive for a young person and families on a budget. Learning to cook will help students understand world cultures, customs and flavors. Plus, cooking will help students practice subjects like science, reading and math, and will increase their critical thinking. Cooking is a great way to actually use skills you learned in school!

Along with cooking, students will also benefits from sewing. Sewing is proven to improve hand-eye coordination. Hand-eye coordination is important not only for our cognitive development but also for our physical well-being. Sewing helps keeps fingers nimble, lowers high blood pressure, improves mood, and helps the immune System. By creating something useful and beautiful from scratch students will cultivate self-confidence. Sewing also helps us manage our moods and boost wellbeing. Sewing also helps students to work on communication, and following direction skills. All these skills are so beneficial student success and well-being.
