My Students
My students are kind, compassionate humans that have not had the best school experiences. They were placed in the ED (Emotional Disability) classroom because they needed a more structured environment to get their education. Because of their behaviors, they have missed out on a lot of their academics and school adventures throughout their school years.
Our classroom's main focus is relationships.
We focus on creating positive relationships in our classroom to ensure a positive experience when coming to school. We want our students to know that we are excited to see them every day and so thankful to get to spend every day with them.
My Project
Help give our classroom the materials to create a "Life Skills Friday". In special education, cross-categorical classes are given the chance to learn life skills. I teach a 3-5 grade ED special education classroom and I am wanting to give them the same chance to learn these basic skills that they will need throughout their lives.
Unfortunately, some of my students are having to care for themselves at home.
Whether that be getting themselves dressed in the mornings, making their own food, etc., they are becoming more independent as a young age. My goal is to teach my students the skills of cooking and cleaning. Having a clean space can help with anxiety, which many of my students suffer from. Some students do not have someone that is teaching them how to keep a clean area.
Some of my students come to school in dirty clothes and the same clothes they had on the day before. Teaching students how to wash their clothes could lead to a more positive self image.
There are a few students that are getting themselves dinner at night. I am wanting to create a cooking lesson each week to teach them how to make a simple dinner, with basic ingredients. Not only is this helpful for the students that have an unstable home life, but it could help each of my students learn new skills that they will take with them throughout their entire life.
