Life Skills Grocery Shopping

My Students

I have six students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

We have 4 autism classrooms in my school and we focus on learning life skills as much as we can. We have the opportunity to go on a free grocery store tour and learn all about food. Students will be able to learn more about the aisles at a grocery store and how to shop for food.

Students are able to learn and remember life skills when they experience a real life setting to practice those skills.

After the food tour students will be selecting items in the store to buy for a cooking experience in their classroom the next day. Students will have a visual checklist of what to look for and will cross off the item once they find it. This trip will help students as they learn to be more independent and help their parents on trips to the grocery store. This experience also helps to prepare them for skills they will need as an adult.
