This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of working at a public charter school in the San Fernando Valley that promotes leadership among our students through service-learning projects and studying the contributions of inspirational world leaders. It is a low-income school with a high percentage of students that qualify for free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Many of the students are English Language Learners. The school offers an inclusive special education program to ensure we are meeting the needs of all students.
In addition to fostering leadership skills in our students, we develop the students' social and emotional skills through the use of animals, such as therapy dogs.
The students that I work with are creative, bright, and eager to learn.
My Project
I chose a few different resources that my students will benefit greatly from. Students in Kindergarten are learning to read and write commonly occurring sight words. They love learning through play at this age. I chose sight word games that are engaging, and dynamic. The games increase in complexity and can be played independently or in small groups. I know they will love this practice! I'm requesting a paper cutter for the classroom too which we'll use in our art projects.
Teaching responsibility and ownership at a young age is extremely important.
Because of this, I included some materials that will help my students take care of our classroom. Due to funding, classroom teachers have become responsible for cleaning our classrooms. The students love to help and love seeing our classroom neat and tidy at the end of each day. They are learning to work together to take care of their materials and space!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
