My Students
My students use the scientific method and engineering process to design experiments and ideas to develop important ideas and develop critical understanding... except in life science. This year, my students deserve the same hands on engagement when learning about living plants and animals.
I teach 3rd and 4th graders at a suburban Title 1 elementary school in north Phoenix.
The school is economically and racially diverse, mostly with one or both parents working outside the home. My students are curious and very active, and learn best when they are physically engaged in learning activities.
My Project
My students need crayfish, precise digital scales, and materials to create habitats for life science. My school was able to purchase a science kit with many great lessons and materials, but it is incomplete. Living crayfish and aquarium plants must be purchased, and there are no funds available. Also, my students are using inadequate pan balances. Digital scales would give more precise and accurate measurements to track changes in plants and animals over time.
I would also like to supplement this kit by having my students create terrariums using 2 liter bottles to provide an opportunity for scientific investigation in a controlled environment.
Finally, I would like to build worm composting bins at each table so that students could observe and learn to conduct experiments with living creatures.
I spent my summer learning what REAL science instruction looks like, and my students know now too.
I don't want to take a break from doing science to read about science. I want my students to understand science is way of thinking, not a body of knowledge to be memorized. These materials will plant the seeds in my students minds to go out and solve the environment problems facing us today.
