Life Science in Action

My students need the osmosis set, meiosis and mitosis posters, cell game, and Genetics DVDs, to help them visualize what we are learning in life science.

My Students

There is movement in life science! Why just sit and read about it? Learn through moving. I create movement activities that demonstrate what we are learning. Before we have a movement day, I have to give my students visual and auditory knowledge of cells, cell reproduction, and genetics.

We live in IL.

Our students come from 3 small towns and the surrounding area of small farms and orchards. My students are 12 and 13 years old. They range from 3rd grade readers to 12th grade readers. They learn through visual, auditory, tactical, and kinesthetic lessons. They do not like to sit to learn. They need hands-on lessons to motivate them.

My Project

The materials I have requested will help my students gain images of osmosis, meiosis, mitosis, and genetics. Once they have observed these learning tools I can have them do a movement activity to reinforce what they have learned. The activity this year for mitosis will be a square dance, which they can repeat in gym class. To reinforce who evolution works I create the "Adapt or Die" game. In Adapt or Die student try to move around a circle, three steps at a time and freezing in a shape, trying not to be killed by a predator that "kills" a specific movement, shape, or characteristic. To make it all the way around they have to watch who the predator is killing and change how they freeze. This year I hope to create movement activities for my lessons on genetics. I am hoping the videos will give me ideas of how to proceed and give my students knowledge they can use to move.

When I was a child I was expected to sit to learn.

I didn't do this very well. I had a reading disability and was a kinesthetic learner. I want all learners in my classes to be able to learn through their preferred learning style and to be graded through different modes like verbal explanations, reports using technology, movement, and drama. Some like to read and take a written test, others need the option to move to learn and be evaluated on their knowledge by other means. Thanks for your help!
