FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. H.'s classroom raised $663
This project is fully funded
I am the science coach at my school, and my focus is helping our teachers enrich the science curriculum. Because I was taught science through a textbook during my elementary years, I hated science. It was not until I dissected a frog in high school biology, that I really found out what science was all about, and I loved it. Now, I feel my mission in life is to give my elementary students a love for science early.
Research proves that children who "experience" science through inquiry-based instruction internalize the concepts and have a deeper understanding than those children who read or hear about science. Over half of our school's population receive free or reduced lunch, which generally means that our children have had few experiences in life. These types of learners learn best through hands-on expereinces; therefore, I am working to provide a rich, inquiry-based science experience for all children in my school.
FOSS (Full Option Science System) has a science kit that is wonderful for my kindergartens. The kit is "Animals 2X2" which puts living animals in the classroom. Our children will build habitats and care for these animals over the entire school year. As they care for the animals, they will study lessons that address state and national science standards. Every thing that is needed for habitats, lessons, and the animals themselves are included in the kit. We just need the kit. All 95 of our kindergarten children will benefit from this kit. Our district has a contract with a refurbishment center who will replace everything we use in the kit after one Kindergarten class has used it, so the other kindergarten classes can use it too.
This inquiry-based science kit is just what our school's learners need to enrich their science experiences, understanding, and knowledge.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
