This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

An important life long skill for all students is reading and understanding what you read.

I teach at an inner city charter school.

My students come from Hispanic and/or low income backgrounds. They are increasing their reading skills and have a desire to become better readers. Our reading curriculum offers a structured lesson where students learn critical decoding skills. Our firm up time give me a chance to work on skills more in depth, including fluency and comprehension.

My Project

My students want to become better at reading. I have requested a variety of materials to help them increase their fluency and their comprehension. These materials will be used in whole group settings, like the guided reading balls, to get students physically involved in comprehension. The story starter cubes will help students create their own stories, using what they know about story structure. The highlighting strips will encourage students to focus on the text.

Fluency and Comprehension are two major parts of becoming a good reader.

If my students can increase their fluency and comprehension it will make books more accessible to them and hopefully create life long readers.
