My students need Chromebooks so that a whole class can explore research projects on the computer together in the library. Currently, we have on 16 desktop computers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school community is in a high poverty area and is comprised of approximately 750 middle school students that come from many different backgrounds and countries which may lack access to computers. Our students have deficient research and computer skills.
Learning to research information on a mobile device or desktop from a reputable website or on-line database is essential to a well rounded education.
Adapting to reading research sites on computers is a skill our students need to practice. All students are exposed to their phones and texting, games and social media and they need to make a conscious effort to turn it off periodically because they have become obsessed with their social life.
They need to balance their time promoting their digital footprint with projects that use the internet for educational enlightenment. They need opportunities that expose and connect them to research sites. They need teachers that guide them towards research projects that develop their interest in these projects.
My Project
I have requested 16 Chromebooks, a charging cart and administration software so the Library has the minimum number of computers to meet the needs of a class that is doing research. This year, I have been so ecstatic that numerous teachers want to use the library for research, but I need more computers.
The teachers are working with me to empower the students with the skills they need to become 21st century learners, giving them critical thinking skills and thought provoking lessons.
I want our students to have access to computers for research purposes, not testing, because our building has approximately 150 laptops at present that can be used by all the 750 students. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for teachers to schedule these mobile devices on a regular basis for research.
