Life, Liberty and Happiness: Democratic Principles Through Literature

My students need trade books to expose them to peaceful change makers around the world.

My Students

Energy, passion, excitement and determination are all words that come to mind when I'm asked to describe the room full of scholars that walk in my door every morning for 180 days. Their home lives are varied and a large percentage of them come from families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of them have very supportive, involved parents, and others have parents whose attention is spread very thin. But no matter their lives at home, they are so excited to learn new things and, when I am able to find a topic that they have strong opinions about (what third grader doesn't have some strong opinions?), they run with it!

My Project

The third grade social studies standards ask us to teach students citizenship skills, as well as the democratic principles upon which our country was built. This is a big topic that is hard to teach to students who are just turning nine and may not have witnessed them in action yet.

I plan to use these trade books as an avenue to encourage students to analyze how people all over the world have practiced their freedoms of speech and peaceable assembly to better their community.

Students will be asked to develop opinions about these freedoms and why they think they are important. They will then be encouraged to identify a problem in our own community and explore ways they can try to make a positive change themselves.
