This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders." ~Abigail Van Buren
My students are a very eager, curious, and energetic group of gifted scholars.
They came into my classroom with a lot of knowledge but little sense of responsibility. Though they are extremely bright, their behavior and lack of responsibility for their own behavior can sometimes get in the way of our learning. What I have noticed about them is that they are all very eager to help. They want to please others but need to be given a purpose. I believe that with the knowledge they have and some more responsibility, they could truly excel past any of our expectations.
My Project
Our cage and bedding will help create a habitat for our class guinea pig. The students have already been trying to earn points to get our class pet based on exhibiting responsibility and good behavior throughout the week. They have been given a goal of how many points they must earn before we get the guinea pig. Once we get our class pet, the students will take turns for different responsibilities that will come with taking care of our class pet. Students that exhibit excellent sense of care and responsibility with the pet will be able to take care of it over the weekend.
This donation will help give the students a sense of purpose in the classroom outside of just fulfilling their educational needs.
They will learn that skills used to take care of a pet can also extend themselves into their everyday life at school and at home. I also believe that it will help with our classroom management and routines by giving them jobs and expectations such as keeping our voices down in order to make the guinea pig feel comfortable in its environment.
