My students need life essentials such as 10 fleece hoodies, lotion, and lip balm to keep them warm, nourished and to help them attend to their personal care needs. They also need snacks like Braided Pretzels, Ritz Crackers 'N Cheese Dip, & Mini-Pretzel Twists.
A typical start of the day with my students is assessing what kind of mood they are in, giving them the once over to make sure they are dressed properly and taken care of. Many of my students are in situations where their basic needs aren't always being met.
I work in a District 75 school in Brooklyn which serves students with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities as well as students on the autism spectrum.
Many of our students are in situations where they are not always tended to in terms of hygiene, clothing or even food. The students in my school range from ages 4-10 and it is our mission as a staff to ensure that they feel as safe and comfortable as possible. They come to school with so many issues and it is imperative that we relieve as much anxiety as we can.
My Project
I am requesting Life essentials such as hoodies, lip balm, lotion, and nutritious snacks like Braided Pretzels, Ritz Crackers 'N Cheese Dip, & Mini-Pretzel Twists. This is so that when a student comes to school, he or she knows that they can have some personal care items at hand to groom themselves if they don't have the opportunity in their own home. WInter is coming and having a new shirt would make a child's day!
Our students are in self- contained classes which means that they spend the majority of the day in one classroom. After a few hours, they begin to become restless and often times they are unable to concentrate on their work for extended periods of time. With such a large gap between breakfast and lunch, the students could use a little snack to keep their blood sugar balanced and their brains working.
This project will make a difference because the students will know they are cared for.
These items will make school feel even more like their home away from home and for our population of students, this is so very important. Something as simple as a bottle of lotion for the classroom or their own personal lip balm or a brand new shirt will be sure to bring a smile to their faces.
