My students need STEM nonfiction books and books about the life cycle at levels appropriate for 1st-3rd reading levels. They need specimen centers to explore Life Science concepts.
My students come from all over the globe to learn in a small and aging school. Our neighborhood is in a huge city with a high number of refugees and energy employees. The diverse ethnicity in the class models the reality of our society, and I love seeing it work in real time!
Many of our students arrive in the United States with absolutely no supplies.
They learn how to eat in a cafeteria, and how to hold a pencil. This is their first introduction to books and the alphabet. Meanwhile, they are learning 2nd grade science concepts. We have two aquariums and a working garden, and butterfly habitats.
My Project
Books and Hands-On Specimens will provide opportunities to explore and acquire science knowledge and vocabulary. Students will benefit from easy readers and life science exploration. Science vocabulary will be attainable with books and centers for both specific and open ended exploration. Life cycle books will supplement our butterfly gardens and frog environments.
English Language Learners will thrive with colorful photography and clear diagrams from the books.
The hands-on explanations and specimens will motivate use of vocabulary. Students will use the books to journal and create presentations about butterflies, frogs and more.
