My Students

Hi, I'm a lower elementary, Montessori-trained teacher within a public school. My students are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. Many of them come from low-income homes, but this doesn't stop them from coming to school with smiles on their faces. I am proud to be a part of an urban school district that offers Montessori education as an option to all families. It is amazing to see how my students can progress academically through this hands-on approach to learning.

My Project

Our school district is an urban district and the largest in the state of Wisconsin. We serve a diverse population, with many BIPOC and low-income students. We have been virtual-only since the start of the pandemic, and in April, families will have the option to return in-person or remain virtual for the last 6 weeks of our school year. We want to give the children-- both those returning in-person and those remaining virtual-- to end this challenging school year with some fun hands-on learning and discovery focusing on life cycles.

We are looking to offer a painted lady butterfly caterpillar to each student to care for an observe as it progresses to a chrysalis and hopefully a butterfly.

We need this kit to offer enough individual systems for each child to have their own. The children that return to in-person will be able to add their chrysalis to the butterfly habitat and allow the butterfly to emerge.

We are also asking for enough owl pellets for each child to have their own, either at school for in-person or available for families to pick up if they have chosen to remain virtual. We will be studying ecology and predators and prey in a habitat. The teachers will provide skewer sticks to help dissect the pellets, as each child will need their own since there will be no sharing of supplies.

Lastly, we are requesting seed starting mix for each child to grow their own marigold. Seeds and cups will be provided by the teachers. Each child will have an opportunity to plant and grow their own plant, making observations as we learn about the needs and function of the plant and the parts of the plant. After a long and challenging year, these materials will offer joy and discovery.
