Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Help me give my students one Apple iPad to use in my classroom.

My Students

I have had the privilege of teaching 29 kindergarteners and they are such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of my students are learning to imitate sounds or hold a pencil. Our group loves to learn new games, play outside, and sing songs.

We are part of a large school that encourages differentiating instruction based on students’ academic needs and interests.

The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways through the use of small groups or centers. We celebrate our success everyday.

My Project

It is important to acknowledge the benefits to having technology in the classroom. Studies have shown that having access to technology increases the chances of future success by a factor of three. Technology encourages student collaboration and improves engagement and knowledge retention. That is why it is important to me that my kindergarteners have access to technology in my classroom.

By providing an Apple iPad to my classroom, you are fostering the use of technology and providing students an opportunity to build relationships through collaboration.

We will be using the iPad for a science unit on the life cycle of a butterfly. We begin the unit by watching a video of a caterpillar on the iPad in small groups. We will grow or our own caterpillars in our classroom and use the iPad to film the caterpillars while we are not in the classroom. It is important that we record the life cycle of the caterpillar with the iPad because students will need to make observations of every stage of their life to fully understand metamorphism. With the use of an iPad in my classroom, students will learn useful life skills while fully engaged in learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.
