Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am the librarian at an elementary school in Houston, TX. My school is majority minority and 98% of the students are economically disadvantaged. I want to create an environment in the library that encourages students to read.
I sincerely believe that if they can relax on a pillow or bean bag chair with a good book they will be more inclined to read and, therefore, increase their literacy.
Many of my students speak little to no English. It is vital to their academic success that they have as much encouragement and exposure to reading as possible.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
