Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I’ve set out on a mission to build an expansive, inclusive class library that our 5th graders will fall in love with. This is the second chapter of a marathon project. My goal is for my students to get excited about the world around them and the people who helped to build it. Where the first chapter focused on popular fiction and themes important to our students, this second chapter includes nonfiction works that encourages their curiosity.
This second chapter showcases a diverse world of inventors and scientists that reflects who our scholars can become; It's for my reluctant readers who prefer science class; Its for those who would rather ask "How does it work" than "What happened next."
When the library of dreams is complete, there will be history and mythology, fantasy and school yard hijinks, mystery and graphic novels… and classic chapter books that have already solidified generations of readers. It will showcase heroes they have heard of and those they don't yet know. I am working to have stories from BIPOC and Latinx voices that reflect the world we live in and our students' own experiences. It will build curiosity, compassion, and confidence in their ability to make a world they will be proud of.
Together, we can build a nation of readers and thinkers.
