My students need these electronic, building, and art materials to explore and create using their STEAM skills in our Library Makerspace.

My Students
"Miss, I made this for you." The quiet sixth grade girl approached me with a shy smile on her face and handed me a contraption made of colored popsicle sticks and cardboard. "It's a pencil holder!" She excitedly explained how she saw the idea on a website and wanted to try it out. Her shyness dissipated as her enthusiasm and pride shined.
A tall eighth grader knocks on the door and points at the paper in his hands and then to an empty computer.
I give him a thumbs up and a smile, knowing that he is a recent immigrant and doesn't yet have the English skills necessary to verbally communicate that he needs to use the printer.
Our school serves almost 1500 students in grades 6-8, and is one of the most culturally diverse schools in NYC. Our student body includes students with disabilities, gifted and talented students, and a large ENL population. The Library Media Center is the learning and technology hub of the school, a place where all of the students feel welcome and safe. It is the place where they go to explore their interests and creativity in an academic setting.
My Project
Our education system is centrally focused around standardized testing and assessment, leaving little room for students to explore their passions and interests. The Library Makerspace is open to all students in our school, and can be accessed during Open Access Lunch periods.
A Makerspace allows students to pursue their curiosities, to work collaboratively with their peers, and to develop a "fail forward" mentality.
Students are free to utilize the materials to pursue their own projects or they can choose to participate in our monthly Maker Challenge. Student Library Leaders hold a workshop tutorial explaining the monthly challenge, and resource guides are uploaded to the Library's website. Students' work is displayed through photos and videos with QR codes throughout the Library. The Makerspace has proven to be extremely successful for all our students that have participated, but most exceptionally it has been an amazing space for our ENL students, students with disabilities, and those that aren't the best test-takers or academic performers. These students are creating without the pressure of assessment, they are learning from the mistakes that they make, and are using their problem-solving skills to find solutions to their issues. Most importantly, making gives these students a sense of pride and accomplishment that they may not experience in their core subject courses.
In addition to the monthly challenges, I plan to work with content area teachers to create enrichment/extra credit projects that can be completed in the Library Makerspace. This will provide differentiated options for students to explore content area in a deeper and more meaningful way.
Our Library Makerspace was created and funded two years ago, but our supplies/materials must be replenished in order to continue providing our students with these amazing opportunities.
