My Students
Our school is a very special place and our students are no exception. Nestled in a busy Brooklyn neighborhood, our students come from all 5 boroughs of New York City to be here each day. They stay late, busy at clubs or other afterschool activities.
Our library-loving students are good-natured, curious and hardworking.
They had to be at the very top of their class to gain admission to our school. Our school is at 60% poverty, just shy of the Title I designation.
My Project
Working in collaboration with 9 Library Monitors, we've created a year-long schedule so that every 8 weeks there are a new set of engaging materials at the Library Makerspace. We have some materials from past years and are eager to be appropriately stocked through the end of 21-22 school year.
The day I brought out yarn and crochet needles, a (socially-distanced) crowd immediately gathered.
Students are so eager to have creative spaces in our academically-focused school, and these supplies allow them to learn new skills and teach each other as well.
This grant will allow students to make holiday cards and a 3D holiday village, lanterns for the Chinese New Year, beads for necklaces, bracelets and keychains, blackout poetry in April, embroidery and lanyard, in addition to the supplies we already have. It will support an exciting Makerspace that thousands of students appreciate and use.
