My Students

When most people think of the Library, they think of a place where you go to search for a book. Our Library Media Center is striving to be so much more than that. We want it to be a place where students can go to be inspired, conduct research, and create using the knowledge they have obtained.

Our school has one of the most culturally diverse collection of students in all of NYC.

We are home to over 1400 students in grades 6-8, with a large ESL population. Our students come from different backgrounds, religions, lifestyles, and homes, but are all eager to learn, to perform, to read, and to express themselves creatively and productively. Our school is working hard to integrate STEM and STEAM activities into our curriculum, and our students are responding with interest and enthusiasm.

My Project

These supplies will allow us to create a Maker Space in the Library Media Center. There are many students who sign-up to spend their lunch period in the Library during daily Open Access hours. Each day I receive numerous requests for art supplies that I meet with a bucket of much-loved markers and some copy paper. The students are looking for more, and are capable of producing great works if provided with the proper supplies. There are also many students that are interested in joining our school's Robotics team, but unfortunately space is limited. The Legos will provide the students with the opportunity to build and create imaginative worlds and simple machines. Maker Spaces are meant to serve as a place for students to think, create, reflect, and improve. Each month I plan to assign different challenges that can be completed using the provided resources. Students who complete the challenge will be given a small reward and acknowledge on a "Maker Mural".

This Learning Center will be extremely beneficial to our ELL students that may struggle expressing themselves with language, but are capable of creating amazing and interesting products.

It will allow students to have fun while using their critical thinking skills to create a product. Students will take responsibility for their learning, motivating them to become independent and lifelong learners.
