Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We live in a social environment. I teach at a school with a large population of anti-readers. What if I made reading social? Would it motivate more teens to read if they could hang out with their friends over books? I'm experimenting. Would you like to help?

I teach in a huge metropolitan school in California.

More than half of our students haven't achieved proficiency on state testing in reading comprehension. Less than 70% of our students graduate. Most of our students don't come from homes that encourage reading for fun. But, our students LOVE socializing, and at lunch our quad is packed with students hanging out with friends. Our hallways echo with laughter. Cell phones are attached to ears as earlobe extensions. So, in order to encourage more reading on campus, I am facilitating a weekly book club in the library at lunch that injects a socializing element to reading.

My Project

Students will meet in the library at lunch time to discuss one of the compelling novels they have chosen to read with a small group of students and one adult discussion facilitator. While eating their food (and cookies that I supply), students will talk about their reading. Each book club session will last four weeks. A few groups of participants will be scattered throughout the library; each table will read a different novel.

I am hopeful that you are as dedicated to the literary development of students and that you will be as curious as I am to determine whether incorporating a social element encourages more reading among students.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I hope to be able to share the results with you soon.
